Way of the Wharves is a volunteer lead community project researching and communicating the history of the the wharves at East the Water. Connected to Bideford by the long bridge East the Water has a long industrial history including: shipbuilding, lime kilns and horticulture, potteries and tobacco, mines for coal and ‘Bideford Black', sand and gravel extraction. This industry and employment combined with the transport links of the river crossing, port and railway formed a vibrant community with pubs, shops, local stories and traditions. Most of the wharves have have lain more or less inactive since 1982 and now the site is to be re-developed WOTW are working to ensure the history is not forgotten and that it is properly recorded and presented. To learn more about about this fascinating history pick up one of our self guided 'Walk the Wharves' maps from Tourist Information or contact us to organise a talk, guided walk or to become a volunteer.
